From: Ben Lipschutz, State Patriot’s Pen Chairman Subject: 2017-2018 VFW Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest Theme: “America’s Gift to My Generation” Fellow Comrades and Sisters: The Patriot’s Pen is a nationwide youth essay competition that provides students the opportunity to express their views on an annual patriotic theme.
That is why we encourage youthful minds to examine our nation's history and their own experiences in modern American society through our Patriot's Pen youth essay-writing contest. Annually, over 100,000 students from grades 6-8, enter to win money for college, as well as an all expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the National first place winner.
The contest consists of four levels. The first level (entry) is sponsored by local VFW Posts. Post winners advance to the VFW District (regional) level where the one first-place winner is advanced to the VFW Department (state) level. The one first-place winner at the Department level is then advanced into the VFW National competition.
Winners of the Wyandotte VFW Post 1136 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen 2019-2020 contests are Abigail Fleming and London Teifer, both students at Riverview Community High School.
The local Patriots Pen winners (all from Enumclaw Middle School) were: Natalie DeMarco, first place at the local level and third at district); Emma Henshaw, second place; Olena Simpson, third place; Issac Soltero, fourth place; Logan Baxter, fifth place; and; Marin Lawson, sixth place.
